These Student Activists from GLSEN's Award-Winning GSA Are Changing Their World

"The 2016 GLSEN Respect Awards took place on the evening of May 23rd. The awards featured plenty of famous faces, including Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, Empire executive producer Ilene Chaiken, Empire star Jussie Smollett, and LGBT activist Edie Windsor. But the real stars of the evening—as evidenced by the standing ovation following their acceptance—were the high school GSA students from the Academy for Young Writers."

"It’s a balmy Saturday morning in mid-June, and at Spring Creek Education Campus in East New York a group of high schoolers are gathering for a first-of-its kind sporting match in the neighborhood."

"The reality star and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner, who has been denounced for her politics by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, visited a high school in Brooklyn with Nicholas Kristof to meet some of her critics."

English and science are the preferred subjects, and Edgar Allan Poe edges out Amos Oz. All the kids are on their way to college - emblematic of the high standards principal Courtney Winkfield and her staff impose upon their students.

"Nobody slips through the cracks," said Winkfield, who invests heavily in a personal mentoring program to keep Young Writer's Academy kids on track.
