Nefertiti Leach

High School Dean

Born and raised in Bed-Stuy, Nefertiti attended NYC public schools 308 through Boys & Girls HS before being selected by A Better Chance program to attend an elite college-prep boarding school in Pennsylvania on scholarship. Nefertiti then headed to the University of Virginia (UVA) where she graduated with two Bachelor Degrees in Government (w/a concentration in American Politics) and African & African American Studies (Wahoowa!!!).  After working in politics across the country, including Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nefertiti realized her passion was her desire to give back in her hometown. She returned to NYC to earn her Masters in Public Administration with a 3.9 GPA on the Dean's List every term.  Afterwards she dedicated the next ten+ years to Educational Advocacy and Social Work at the local, state and federal levels.  Selected as an NYC Mayoral Office Community Leader in 2015, Nefertiti refocused her talents towards education as a Dean at another Brooklyn high school.  Having petitioned for AFYW to relocate to this beautiful new campus a few years ago with her church, St. Paul Community Baptist Church, Nefertiti is super excited about the opportunity to work in this phenomenal school as well! The one thing she wants her students to know: "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are Determined to Learn, No One Can Stop you!

Valerie Gary

8th/9th Grade Guidance Counselor

After graduating from St. John's University in 2007 with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice she decided to volunteer with a domestic public service work based organization. Considering her year of service in New Orleans, LA was one of the best experiences she has ever had, she was certain that working with students to rebuild and/or map out their future was the career for her. She continued her education and graduated (again!) from St. John's University in 2011 with a Masters of Education in School Counseling. Entering her 4th year at AFYW, Valerie is eager and excited to take on a new role as the Bridge Counselor, serving both middle and high school students. There is no challenge too big for Valerie as she always says, "experience and exposure set the bar for excellence."
